What are the key updates to travel eSIM functionality in iOS 26?
iOS 26 introduces several significant improvements to how travel eSIMs are installed and managed, making the process smoother and more intuitive for users. The most notable changes include a streamlined installation process, the ability to install a travel plan before a user departs, intelligent plan switching, and new installation methods.
Smoother install process
Apple has refined the user experience for installing eSIMs in iOS 26. The new process is more intuitive and requires fewer steps to configure the eSIM on a user's device.
Quicker install outside of plan destination
In previous iOS versions, the eSIM installation and activation processes were linked, which could cause errors for some users attempting to install a travel plan before departure. iOS 26 now separates these two steps so users can install their travel eSIM plan at home, and the activation happens once they arrive at their destination. So no more slow installs with that seemingly endless ‘activating’ status being shown.
Simple plan switching
iOS 26 leverages a combination of Siri, Calendar, Email, and location data to provide intelligent plan switching prompts. The device can prompt a user to switch on their travel plan up to 24 hours before they depart and then prompt them to switch back to their home plan upon their return. This feature removes the manual effort of switching between plans, ensuring a seamless and efficient transition.
New install paths available for eSIMs
iOS 26 expands the installation options for eSIMs. As well as the standard QR code and direct install links, a new carrier app installation path is now available. With this method, providers can pre-populate fields such as "Home" or "Abroad" and "Data Only" or "Voice and Data," simplifying the setup process for the user. Additionally, this method allows providers to send a list of relevant country codes to the device, which enhances the accuracy of the new plan-switching feature.
Please note: The carrier app install path requires special permissions from Apple before it can be used. While not directly tied to Apple's Carrier Bundle program, it is anticipated that Apple will likely grant access to those who already have existing Carrier Bundle permissions.
How do my customers take advantage of these updates?
Apple iOS updates typically reach more than 50% of active iPhones within a few days of release and over 80% within 2 months — far faster than any other mobile OS — so most of your customers will get access to these very quickly. If your customers want to take advantage of these new features, Apple will be rolling this update out from September 15 2025 so we recommend you advise them to upgrade to iOS 26 as soon as it is available.
