Keeping or Changing Your Customer's Number When Switching Providers
If you're customer is switching mobile providers in the UK, they have two options when it comes to their phone number:
- Keep their current number
- Start with a new number
This process is part of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) — a system that allows them to move their mobile number from one provider to another.
To complete the switch, they will need one of two codes: a PAC or a STAC.
What is a PAC Code?
PAC stands for Porting Authorisation Code. Your customer will need this code if they wish to keep their current mobile number when moving to a new provider.
Once they give their PAC code to their new provider, they’ll transfer their number and automatically cancel their previous mobile service.
How your customer can get a PAC code:
- Text PAC to 65075
- They'll receive a reply with their PAC code (valid for 30 days)
- This code can be shared with their new provider during or after activation (inside 30 days of receipt)
What is a STAC Code?
STAC stands for Service Termination Authorisation Code. Your customer uses this if they want to switch providers and get a new number, without keeping their old one.
Giving the STAC code to their new provider will cancel their old service without needing to contact their previous provider separately.
How to get a STAC code:
- Text STAC to 75075
- They’ll receive a code (also valid for 30 days)
- This code can be shared with their new provider during or after setup (within 30 days)
If they're switching to a new provider and not sure which option is best, they need to consider whether they want to keep their current number or prefer to start with a new one.
